“Bharat Versus India: G20 Dinner Invitation Sparks Controversy by Referring to the “President of Bharat”

The BJP has been criticizing the newly formed opposition bloc, INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance), by repeatedly stating that the name ‘India’ is a reminder of colonial times. A fresh dispute has arisen between the NDA and the INDIA bloc over invitations to a G20 summit dinner hosted at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, as they were labeled ‘President of Bharat’ instead of ‘President of India’.

AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh has alleged that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), led by Mohan Bhagwat, aims to alter the country’s Constitution by eliminating the word ‘India’ in favor of ‘Bharat.’ Sanjay Singh expressed, “Babasaheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar wrote in the constitution – ‘India That Is Bharat.’ But Modi and RSS, who have aversion towards Babasaheb, wish to amend the constitution. Why do Bhagwat and Modi hold such animosity towards Babasaheb?” in his post on ‘X’.

RJD MP Manoj Jha reacted to the name change, stating, “…It has only been a few weeks since we named our alliance INDIA, and the BJP has already started sending invitations with ‘Republic of Bharat’ instead of ‘Republic of India.’ Article 1 of the Constitution reads ‘India that is Bharat.’ You cannot take India or Bharat away from us…”

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying, “Mr. Modi can continue distorting history and dividing India, which is Bharat, a Union of States. But we will remain undeterred. After all, what is the objective of INDIA parties? It is BHARAT—Bring Harmony, Amity, Reconciliation And Trust. Bharat will prevail! India will triumph!”

In response to Jairam Ramesh, BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh questioned the issue with using the term ‘Bharat,’ asking why Jairam Ramesh feels ashamed. He emphasized that the nation has been known as Bharat since ancient times and is even mentioned in the Constitution. He accused them of creating unnecessary misunderstandings.

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari, while speaking to ANI, criticized the Modi government and questioned how India could be removed. He stated, “…PM Modi introduced initiatives like ‘Make in India,’ ‘Skill India,’ ‘Khelo India’… They (BJP) fear the word ‘India.’ Article 1 of the Constitution states ‘India, that is Bharat’… How can the name ‘India’ be removed…?
